Single Ply Membrane

Klein House, Galashiels

Background

In 1957 the celebrated architect Peter Womersley designed one of the finest houses to have been built in Britain during the Mid-Century period. It was commissioned by the renowned textile designer Bernat Klein and situated on a beautiful plot of over 3 acres, 35 miles south of Edinburgh, with far-reaching views of the Borders countryside. This four-bedroom house with a studio wing has a rare Category A listing from Historic Environmental Scotland.

The replacement of the roof was critical to restoring and ensuring the longevity of this architectural gem. The roofing project consisted of warm roof and cold roof areas, totalling 185m2. Local Fatra approved installer Laurence McIntosh, in association with Jewson Builders Merchants, was employed to carry out the waterproofing works for this project.

Notable benefits

For the roof refurbishment, the existing waterproofing system was removed and a new 18mm plywood deck installed. Fatra FF818 polyethylene vapour control layer and tapered rigid PIR insulation were used in conjunction with the lap-fixed Fatra FF810 single ply membrane.

One noteworthy benefit of using the lap-fixed Fatra FF810 membrane system is that it is quick to install, having fixing centres of 150mm along the laps.

Laurence McIntosh completed the project in December 2020 and it was delivered with the benefit of a 20 year product guarantee.

Fatra FF810 is available from Fatra UK Ltd and can only be installed by Fatra trained and licensed contractors.
